LITTORAL

Littoral

We published our fourth book in early summer 2023. It is called Littoral and has a different feel from our books so far. Littoral is be based on the theme of the sea and the coast, and includes 35 black and white images from three photographers.By limiting the number of photographers we believe they have the opportunity to show more of their work. In addition this book has a narrative threaded through it to produce a cohesive piece of work. As before, everyone is giving their time and experience for free, and all proceeds will go to the RNLI.In terms of contributors the book has attracted three brilliant photographers – Lynn FraserAli Lewis and Fiona McCowan. The work they submitted is of an exceptional standard and after selecting the first cut of images we supplied a hard copy to Jeff Young to provide a narrative weaving together his memories and emotions on viewing them over a couple of weeks. In addition, the book benefits from a foreword written by Jack Lowe.

About the Contributors

Photographs by:

Lynn Fraser

Lynn Fraser lives on the Black Isle, just to the north of Inverness. The coast is a landscape that she enjoys spending time, and getting lost in, with the sound of the sea as a backing track.Lynn is excited about working to a specific brief to produce and curate a set of high quality images. She feels comfortable with the collaborative nature of this project, the learning that will come from it and the push it will give her to achieve her highest standard possible.Website | Instagram

Ali Lewis was introduced to photography about 5 years ago through her love of nature. Drawn naturally to the small details of nature she has recently pushed herself into other areas where she has been inspired by the works of others outside of her comfort zone.Ali was chosen to take part as one of the contestants on The Great British Photography Challenge (BBC4) where she was given the opportunity to develop her skills and confidence. One of the challenges involved her photographing a loch, the sea and a waterfall.Instagram

Fiona McCowan

Since childhood holidays by the sea in Northern Ireland Fiona McCowan has always been fascinated by the sea, where she is at her happiest on a deserted beach with her camera.Last year Fiona was awarded a FRPS in the new Photobook genre for her handmade book In the Offing based on her interpretation of the sea. The book combined her love of coastal photography and words with 21 images and 12 text pages. The Littoral project clearly resonated with her.Website | Instagram

Jeff Young is a writer based in Liverpool. His latest book Ghost Town – A Liverpool Shadowplay (2020, Little Toller Books) takes a journey through haunted places of memory and loss, summoning the ghosts of loved ones and long departed heroes who somehow still occupy the disappearing nooks and ruins of Liverpool.Photo: Brian Roberts

Foreword by:

Jack Lowe

Jack Lowe describes himself as a documentarist using photography, audio, film and words to shine a light on the greatness of others. As a master printer, Jack was responsible for bringing Paul Kenny’s creations to life, including the Masters of Vision exhibition in 2015. Later that year, Jack embarked on a major photographic mission: The Lifeboat Station Project. Eight years on, he continues to use all his techniques to make what he now considers to be his life’s work. Using an early Victorian process known as wet collodion, his aim is to craft unique handmade photographs on glass at all 238 RNLI lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland.
